Event 03 - Open Doubles
Mark & Dan entered the Open Doubles as the top seed with a combined rating of
5069, but were tested throughout the match by their younger opponents whose
ratings were 4892. In each of the games Bang & Justen jumped into the lead
forcing the South Benders to come from behind. The intensity of the match
can be seen as Dan prepares to receive service from Bang - no lack of
concentration on either face here. Mark whistles a cross court backhand
while Dan begins to make his move back into position in case of a return -
nothing could be taken for granted during any point. At the conclusion of the match, Mark with heavy brow, shows his obvious respect
for the skills of his opponents while Dan heaves a sigh of relief at escaping
with the victory.
There was also no lack of intensity on the other side of the net. Bang
closely studies his opponent to see his reaction to Justens service. Even
though Mark may tower over Justen in height, he clearly demonstrates his power
with a drive deep into the corner as Mark looks on. Throughout the
tournament Bang wowed everyone with his powerful counter drives. It is
obvious that Dan takes it seriously as Bang begins his move to blast Marks
forehand back across the net. Wish I could say that one of those forehands
was captured on film as they were beautiful to behold, a flat line drive back
over the net that never even allowed the opponent time to unwind from their
drive.
Joe and AJ made it to the Semis with a win over the MN team of Nate Curran
and Anders Truelson (4057)
Mark & Nick made it to the Semis with a victory over the IL team of Krzysztof
Szpringiel & Karlo Kovacevic. (Mark during play with Bang Chao
Huang)
